The Elder Tree’s Dark Gift. Gateway Between the Worlds.

The Elder is one of the most sacred and feared trees in European folk tradition — a tree that stands at the threshold between the living world and the world of spirits, between the known and the unknown, between the decision already made and the one not yet taken. Its berries, dark and heavy with the tree’s deep magic, carry that liminal quality into every working they enter. In the folk magic tradition, Elderberry is used in decision-making spells, divination, and astral travel — a berry that opens the veil between worlds, sharpens the inner sight needed to see clearly at crossroads, and carries the practitioner’s consciousness into the realms beyond ordinary waking awareness.

The Elder stands at the threshold. Work with its berries when you need to stand there too.

Folklore & Magical Uses

In Norse tradition, the Elder tree was sacred to Freya — goddess of love, magic, and the shamanic practice of seiðr, the art of traveling between worlds to gather hidden knowledge. The Elder was understood to be inhabited by the Elder Mother, a powerful spirit who guarded the tree and could grant or withhold its gifts depending on how she was approached. In Celtic tradition, the Elder was one of the trees of the Otherworld, associated with death, rebirth, and the passage between states of being. To cut an Elder without asking the Elder Mother’s permission was considered deeply dangerous.

In the folk magic tradition, Elderberry is used in divination workings to open the inner eye and sharpen the practitioner’s ability to perceive what is hidden. It is burned as incense before readings, added to dream pillows to facilitate prophetic dreaming and astral travel during sleep, and used in decision-making workings where the practitioner needs to see clearly beyond the immediate circumstances to the deeper truth of a situation. Some workers place Elderberries on their divination altar as an offering to the spirits of the crossroads, asking for clear sight and wise guidance. The Elder has always known the way between the worlds. Its berries carry that knowledge into your hands.

No ingerir.
