In the Folklore

Reversing formulas are among the most potent in the conjure worker's arsenal. In the old tradition, when a person found themselves plagued by a run of bad luck, illness, financial loss, or relationship trouble that seemed to come from nowhere, a root doctor might diagnose a crossed condition — a trick laid by an enemy. The remedy was a reversing working: uncrossing the condition and sending the harm back to whoever sent it.

Reversing candles — traditionally black on the outside and red within — were dressed with reversing oil and burned while the worker prayed the condition away and back. The black layer absorbed and neutralized the evil; the red layer sent it home. What you send out returns to you threefold. The worker simply ensured the sender received what they had given.
