Court case work is one of the most practical and well-developed areas of American hoodoo. In communities where access to legal resources was limited and the justice system was not always just, root workers provided spiritual support for those facing legal battles. Court case formulas were used to influence judges, confuse opposing witnesses, empower the person being tried, and call on divine justice to prevail.

Classic court case workings included anointing the soles of the shoes before entering the courthouse — so that every step taken on that ground was spiritually charged. Documents and petitions were dressed with oil at the four corners.
