In the Folklore

Separation and break-up workings are among the most requested in the conjure tradition, and among the most misunderstood. Root workers were clear: this work is not inherently malicious. A mother might use it to separate her child from a dangerous partner. A person might use it to end their own entanglement with someone who was draining them. A community might call on it to dissolve a harmful alliance between two people causing trouble.

Traditional break-up workings often involved writing the two names on separate pieces of paper, anointing them with break-up oil, and physically separating them — tearing them apart, burning them, or burying them in different locations. Black candles dressed with the oil were burned while the worker prayed for the bond to dissolve. Ingredients like black pepper, sulfur, and crossing herbs were used to create discord and distance between the two parties. What has been joined can be unjoined. What has been bound can be cut free.
