In the beginning, when the Orishas descended from heaven to the earth, they found their way blocked an impenetrable forest, dense and dark, with no path through it. The other Orishas stopped. Ogún did not stop. He raised his machete and he cut. He cut until there was a path. He cut until the world was open. He cut until everything that came after him every Orisha, every human being, every civilization that has ever been built could enter.
That is Ogún. The one who goes first. The one who does the work that makes everything else possible. The one who does not wait for the path to appear but makes it.
He is the Orisha of iron which means he is the Orisha of every tool, every blade, every weapon, every machine that has ever been made of metal. The farmer’s machete. The surgeon’s scalpel. The soldier’s rifle. The mechanic’s wrench. The butcher’s knife. Every cutting, every building, every repairing, every fighting all of it is done with iron, and all iron belongs to Ogún. He is present in every operating room, every construction site, every battlefield, every garage, every kitchen where a blade is lifted and work is done.
He lives at the edge of the forest and the edge of civilization; the place where the wild meets the built world, where the work of clearing and building never stops. He is not comfortable in the city. He is not comfortable in the palace. He is comfortable at the forge, at the worksite, at the place where something is being made or cut or fought for. He is the Orisha of those who work with their hands and their bodies, who build what others live in, who fight what others fear, who cut what others cannot.
His Catholic face in the Lucumí tradition is Saint Peter the one who holds the keys, who guards the gate, who was the first to act when action was needed. His number is three or seven. His colors are green and black. His day is Tuesday. His machete is his sacred implement. His offerings are rum, cigars, roasted corn, and smoked fish. The offerings of the worker, the warrior, the man of the forest.

How to Work This Candle
Approach Ogún with the directness and respect he commands. He has no patience for ceremony that is not backed by sincerity, but he responds powerfully to those who come to him with genuine need and genuine work to do. If you are initiated or working within a house, follow the protocols of your tradition. If you are approaching with sincere devotion, come with his offerings prepared: rum poured at the base, a cigar lit and left burning beside the candle, roasted corn and smoked fish on his altar. His colors are green and black — dress his space in those colors. Dress the top of the glass with Ogún oil or a strong, cutting oil — cedar, pine, or a blend that carries the smell of the forest and the forge. Write your petition naming exactly what path needs to be cut, what obstacle needs to be removed, what work needs to be blessed, what surgery or battle or labor needs his protection. Place it beneath the candle. Light it on a Tuesday, his day, if possible. Greet him: Ogún Onirè! Ogún Arèrè! Ogún, lord of iron! He was the first to cut the path. He will cut yours.
