Her Story
Dymphna was an Irish princess of the 7th century, daughter of a pagan chieftain and a devout Christian mother. When her mother died and her father's grief curdled into madness, Dymphna fled to Belgium with her confessor, Father Gerebernus. Her father pursued her, and when she refused to return, he took her life. She was martyred for her faith and her virtue.
In the centuries that followed, miraculous healings of the mentally ill were reported at her shrine in Gheel, Belgium — and the town became one of the earliest known communities to care for the mentally ill with compassion rather than confinement. Dymphna was canonized as the patroness of those with nervous and mental afflictions, epilepsy, and those who care for them. She knows what it is to be pursued by darkness. She knows how to lead you out of it.
