The Color That Contains All Colors. The Light Before the Light Is Divided. The Candle That Can Do Anything.

Every tradition that works with candles has a relationship with white. Not because white is the absence of color, it is not. White is the presence of all color at once, the full spectrum of light before it is broken into its component parts by a prism or a raindrop or the particular need of a particular moment. White is what you start with before you know what you need. White is what you return to when what you need is everything at once.

In the hoodoo and folk magic tradition, white is the universal candle. The one that can stand in for any other color when the specific color is not available, because white contains all of them. It is also the candle of the ancestors, burned on ancestral altars across traditions from West Africa to the Caribbean to the American South, the light that guides the dead and honors their memory and keeps the connection between the living and those who have gone before alive and reciprocal. It is the candle of prayer in its purest form not a specific petition for a specific outcome, but the simple act of offering light to the divine, of saying: I am here, I am paying attention, I am grateful, I am open.

White is burned for peace in the home, in the mind, in the body, in the relationship that has been fractured by conflict. It is burned for purity and cleansing, to clear a space of what does not belong there and restore it to its natural, unobstructed state. It is burned for protection, the white light that surrounds and seals and keeps what is inside safe from what is outside. It is burned for healing when the nature of what needs to be healed is not fully known — because white healing is comprehensive, addressing the whole person rather than a specific condition. It is burned for truth, for clarity, for the new beginning that needs to be blessed before it has taken its specific shape.

The White 7 Day Glass Candle carries all of the full spectrum, the universal light, the candle that can do anything.

Traditional Uses

  • Purity and spiritual cleansing — burned to clear a space, a person, or a situation of spiritual debris and negativity
  • Peace and calm — burned to bring peace to a home, a relationship, or a mind that will not quiet
  • Protection — white light as a shield; burned for general spiritual protection and the sealing of a cleansed space
  • The ancestors and the dead — burned on ancestral altars, for the recently departed, and for communication with those who have passed
  • Prayer and devotion — the most sacred and neutral candle color; burned as a simple act of offering light to the divine
  • Healing — comprehensive, full-spectrum healing when the specific nature of the illness is unknown or when the whole person needs to be addressed
  • Truth and clarity — burned when truth needs to come to light or clarity is needed in a confusing situation
  • New beginnings — the clean slate; burned when something new is beginning and needs to be blessed
  • Universal substitute — white stands in for any candle color when the specific color is unavailable

How to Work This Candle

Come to the white candle with whatever you have a specific petition, a prayer of gratitude, a need for peace, a desire to honor the ancestors, or simply the need to sit in the presence of light and be still. It will meet you where you are. If you have a specific intention, write it and place it beneath the candle. If your intention is devotion or ancestral honor, write a prayer or the names of those you are remembering. If your intention is simply peace, write that word — peace — and let it be enough. Dress the top of the glass with an oil that matches your intention: Peace oil for calm, Protection oil for sealing, Ancestor oil or Florida Water for ancestral work, Van Van for cleansing and clarity, or simply a pure oil like frankincense or sandalwood for prayer and devotion. White flowers — white roses, white carnations, white chrysanthemums — placed beside the candle honor its energy and the ancestors who respond to it. If you are using this candle as a substitute for another color, dress it with the oil of the working you are doing and state your intention clearly when you light it. White will carry it. White carries everything.

Each candle is approximately 8 inches tall and burns for up to 7 days.
